Literacy Inclusion Toolkit

This toolkit has been developed to assist educators and educational settings in Northern Ireland (NI) to support those pupils who may experience or be at risk of developing literacy difficulties.

The Literacy Inclusion Toolkit (LIT) provides a toolkit of strategies and procedures which may help to tackle the literacy difficulties experienced by the significant minority of pupils in every classroom, whilst accommodating the complex profile of the individual pupil.

It is based on well-founded research and follows the transition of the pupil from Foundation Stage and through each Key Stage and into further education and/or work. The LIT emphasises the importance of implementing accessibility tools and ‘reasonable adjustments’, at the appropriate time, so that no pupil is left behind in education.

To fully appreciate the LIT, it is recommended that you read the Introduction and the chapters on the ‘Environment and the voice of the child / young person’ and ‘Literacy Difficulties and the impact on SBEW’.

The core 6 curriculum-based chapters are Speech, Language & Communication (SLC), Executive Function, Phonological Awareness & Phonics, Reading, Spelling and Writing. Each chapter has a general introduction, followed by guidance on ‘the impact on learning’ and ‘recommendations for reasonable adjustments, separated into Key Stages.

The final 4 chapters of the LIT focus on ‘Transition’, ‘Study Skills’ and ‘Access Arrangements’ and ‘Learning Strategies for students in post-16 education, training and higher education’.

The Appendix has helpful guidance and resources which will help support implementation of the LIT.
